Blunderbuss comes for the Dutch meaning "thunder pipe". Brass barrelled blunderbuss started to be manufactured in the 1670s. They proved quite popular both on board ship and as a weapon for home defence or while travelling. The brass was lighter than a steel barrel and withstood the corrosive sea water on board ship.
At the Battle of Culloden, a number of brass barrelled blunderbusses were used by the Jacobite Highlanders . One found on the battlefield is now on display at the historic site's museum, which was purchased for $115,000 . One Jacobite recounted how he fired his blundebuss than his pair of Scottish pistols at the British line. The Culloden blunderbuss was noted as being loaded with 18 ball, presumably buck or swan shot. Some blunderbuss owners even poisoned their shot: "he arms himself with a Blunderbuss, charged with fifteen large poisoned sluggs, conceals it under a large Cloak..."
The use of this blunderbuss continued into the early 19th century and was used as home defence during the crime spree in London after the Napoleonic Wars.
Specifications
As with all our other flintlocks, the vent is not drilled (read details below) so we can ship easily to our door throughout North America and to Europe and the UK. Aside from that they are exactly like the originals. A fine addition to any collection.
The blunderbuss is very maneuverable in the melée of battle with its 18-inch brass barrel and 33 1/2 inch length overall (.69 calibre). We also sell this blunderbuss with a 15 inch barrel. As the image show, this is an excellent quality reproduction. As with all of our flintlocks, this replica is made faithful to those of the period. The brass barrel is lathed from solid bar stock (not cast) and has a steel (type:BS970 no.080M40) tight breech plug with steel tang. The lock is made with strong durable springs and has a case-hardened frizzen (hammer) that throws good sparks. We use a industrial case-hardening factory process that makes sparking both more reliable and longer lasting. Presently no other musket provider uses this technique.

This means the product can be shipped right to your doorstep. A certified gunsmith may decide to alter a musket or pistol to a firing state by drilling the vent hole and test firing it. No need to remove the breech plug. We are not legally responsible for any changes from its present state. Please read our Conditions of Use and Legal Disclaimer. The customer is expected to be aware of the laws of their locality that govern products of this nature.
